Hi guys, today we're talking about prayer. But what is prayer? Prayer is connecting to something higher then ourselves. Some call it the higher powers, god or the universe. But how do you pray? At its most basic level praying could be praying under your breath or in your head. It could be praying before a job interview (reaching out there for help). Or when you just feel like some catching up time with god.
From a Christian perspective it could be praying to Jesus, praying to the Archangel Michael. It could be praying to the goddess or the god, however you see it. It could even be praying by connecting to your higher self. With gentle words of self-encouragement.
But what if I was to tell you, a prayer doesn't have to be structured task? There are different ways of praying. Lighting a candle could be seen as a prayer. Even to a dead relative. Because a candle can be seen through the veil between worlds. Just think of walking into a Catholic church and seeing people lighting candles around you.
Praying in nature is another thing that can be quite fulfilling. As that is where I feel a deep connection to the Earth. Often I pray by the same spot outside in the garden and afterwards I keep my eyes open for a gentle sense of encouragement. Or any signs around me from the universe. Like a raven hovering above my head, or a feather drifting down through the clouds. Or a black cat emerging. I would say keep an eye out for any natural signs that the universe is trying to give us - a hint of some kind after the prayer. That's what our ancestors did.
For example, I trod on a dead rat a few days ago after praying to Apollo, and later on ended up having a very bad day. The universe has a sense of humor. Or the answer might not come to you straight away, it might come to you later on today or tomorrow. The answer might even come to you in your dreams.
Some say that prayer is when we talk to god, and meditation is when he talks back. And if you aren't really into meditation, I encourage you to meditate more often. As you really will start noticing a difference in yourself. There's even some forms of divination that some people view as a way of talking to god. For instance there's not just the classic crystal ball method, but also there's the method of automatic writing where somebody would write the sentence they want help with or who they want to connect with then start writing. And connecting to god through divination.
Or say you're struggling with a certain thing, you can even try trying to connect to god. Through writing a letter with a pen and pencil. Like- Dear god, kind of thing! And put the letter on your altar. Burn it and scatter the ashes. Or whatever you feel comfortable doing with the letter after you wrote it!
And a lot of shamanic work. From a shamanic perspective revolves around working with something called power animals and helper spirits - where they believed these power animals would help them and guide them through life. It is believed by shamans that all people have at least one power animal, that works a bit like a guardian angel or a spirit guide that helps them through life! In fact ask a native American, there's no shamanism without power animals and helper spirits!
If you want connect to your power animal I probably recommend trying something like shamanic journeying. Or just pray to them out loud, asking your power animal to reveal itself to you. Then watch out for any signs. Like often seeing a crow in your daily life could mean that a crow spirit guide is trying to communicate itself to you! Witches even believe about having an animal familiar which is a similar concept, that helps them with their spells!
And Yoga, well that's praying. As the original positions of Yoga are actually based on Hindu god worship. Linked with ancient Hindu culture. Through I don't see why not from a pagan perspective. If you are a pagan you can't modify the Yoga positions so you're worshiping gods of others' faiths. Like facing a statue of the Green Man and doing yoga positions facing the statue. Or facing a tree and doing Yoga, thus connecting to the tree spirit through the Yoga practice.
Ok, there's many ways of praying to god. Though as rule of thumb, never ask god to kill somebody, that's if he would. And it's an idea to leave something like an offering. Like an item in return for the god's help. Like some herbs, or some wine. Though coffee would work if you think god likes drinking coffee! Sometimes relationships with gods are like relationships with people. It needs to be a give and take relationship!
