Welcome to lesson three! Here I'm going to say about creating a health altar. Aka a gym magick altar.
But first let us identify what energy fitness is identified with? Fitness is quite a fiery energy. Destructive but fluid at the same time. Feminine and masculine. Yet, it also has that sexy love stricken element to it. I don't know how many of you have walked into a gym. Or a yoga class. And couldn't help feeling that fiery energy hanging in the air. Causing people to stop and stare at someone doing squats with short legging? This is because fire is not just a destructive, fiery high element. It also symbolizes lust and passion as well. Yet, if you’re going swimming. That also might have a more fluid calming element to it then say, lifting weights.
So what would a gym magick altar look like? I find a small portable altar works perfect for gym magick.
I am going to mention two types of my most used altars for gym magick...
One- a home gym altar.
Two- an altar you can take with you when you are out.
One reason I happen to like a small portable altar is it is easy to bring around with me. Or unpack as I’m at home.
It could just be some items wrapped up in a red cloth. Like some crystals. I particularly like black crystals like black Onyx or black Obsidian. And quartz.
Black crystals are particularly good for soaking up negative energy. And quartz is good for manifesting.
There are crystal pyramids and pointed crystal towers. That you can put to the side of you when you do exercise that can help you manifest. And I find are best for gym magick.
I also like a miniature statue. When representing the god and the goddess. And when you're doing some of the fitness session. You can just put say the goddess statue in front of you and imagine yourself directing the energy towards the statue. Perhaps imaging a link. And do the fitness session as an offering to them. Remember the gods are always listening, even when you’re working out!
Or if you want to be clearer as to which god you're worshiping. You could have a picture or statue of a particular god or goddess. And just acknowledge them as you are doing the fitness session. That you are giving them an offering under your breath.
I sometimes try to picture the gods in front of me when I do a fitness session. Often when I do fitness, I actually find it easier to imagine or connect with them.
Or if you are into working with power animals. I often connect with my power animals when I do fitness. And imagine my power animal running beside me. Also, when we do fitness, we do tend to relate back to our own animal instincts. Therefor fitness can be a great way of connecting to them!
I often find the process of fitness as an overpowering energy. Not just before but also after the session. This is particularly to do with the chakras, and fitness having impact on my energy channels.
If you have a portable altar. Also having a little something representing the four elements can be helpful.
A big part of witchcraft and paganism is connecting to nature. And just having something of nature. That reminds you of the four elements being with you. And helping you connect to a task that you're doing, can energetically help you find that connection. Also, everything is made up of energy. Including us, the Earth, trees, nature and the animals.
One technique is try to focus your energies on the four elements. As you're taking the rest period during your fitness routine. Or doing the fitness routine out on the grass or by a river can also be good.
Earth, air. Fire and water. Or just grab a piece of tree bark or a branch. And feel the energies in your hand bond with it.
A small shell could represent water. A rock or a branch could represent Earth. A small tea candle could represent fire. Or a feather could represent Air.
Also, I find the element of fire. Can be the most potent element while doing gym magick. So having something representing fire on your gym magick altar. Can be a great idea. My way of representing fire is having a red tablecloth. And keep my gym altar wrapped up in it. With an elastic band tied around the top. And when I unpack it I just unwrap the elastic band. And put the items from my gym kit altar on the nearby chair or on the floor. So, it's facing in my direction while I'm doing the session.
But just by all means be careful if you're lighting a candle to represent the element of fire during a fitness session. You never know?
Also, I like to have something representing my inner strength during a fitness session. This could be a small medallion representing Thor’s hammer. Or one of those Celtic charms with a sword on.
And this just helps me connect with my inner strength. Or if you want something with an animal on you could pick something like a bear or a wolf. Or at least more of the masculine traits to it. And I find having an item representing strength can also count - an example is a type of athame.
Or if you're more one with the feminine goddess energies. You could have something with a gemstone heart on. Or something representing Venus/Aphrodite instead. Or both masculine and feminine! And this can help you connect to ether connect to the either the goddess of love. Or the god roaring aggression during a fitness session. I personally only have something on my gym altar representing the god aspect. And work more with the feminine on my main altar.
I have a necklace medallion representing Mars/Ares. That I only wear or carry in my pocket when I do a fitness session. And that helps me draw up Ares's strength and roar aggression inside of myself when I do a fitness session.' - Though if you are more into working with Athena, that could work too!
Alright, the hardest thing in gym magick is realising fitness is a magical process in the first place. And that's the hardest thing about gym magick.
And that's why having a gym altar - even having it next to you or in front of you - can really help remind you that you're not only doing fitness right about now to connect to your inner magick! But you are also taking time to connect to your pagan path and your spirituality. As a warrior pagan.
Really quickly-
Here's the second type of portable altar. When you're out it's a different case. You need to be a bit more inventive in what you carry with you. As you can't just carry your home portable altar with you! If you have a lot to carry. Including all your gym kit in a rucksack, including some spare trainers to change into...
So, here's a way around that. Making your normal gym kit. Your altar can be a way around that! And here’s how…..
Say your gym towel. Could that be seen as an altar cloth? The way I use my gym towel is I tend to use it as a portable magick circle. Say I do a meditation session after normal exercise routine. I sometimes sit cross legged on my gym towel. And imagine the gym towel covering me with a beacon of light and energy. Protecting from negative outside influences.
And to re-enchant the towel a rub it with Sage essential oil. And perhaps a bit of cinnamon. Dabbing it around the four corners of the towel. You would need to this quite often as the gym towel does tend to soak up a lot of negative energy at the gym!
And the towel also represents a witch’s broom at the same time. Well, sort of? Because in a way it is used for clearing energy…
Your water flask or protein shake container could be seen as a ceremonial chalice. And you just imagine a ball of energy/ light forming around the centre of the glass. As you cup it in your hands. Then drink it after your session. And imagine the water regenerating your energy and helping you heal. And restore your energy.
'Will do another post on this next time!'
The wand you use at the gym doesn't have to be a stick. It could be a favourite piece of jewellery. One that's filled with your own energy signature.
It could be a ring, but also at the same time a wand. That could be activated when you point your index finger at something. And imaging a white light coming of your finger as you do it. And perhaps saying a simple word like- 'Love' or 'Protection' as you envision the light.
Or a piece of jewellery could also be seen as the gym magick version of a wand. Like the Mars necklace I mentioned earlier. Also, for safety you might have to take the ring off before the exercises. But not so much with a necklace. Sorry, my bad…
And when I often go to the gym. I often carry a black stone me in my pocket. And connect to the stone’s energies for protection as I lock my locker. I say a prayer of protection to the stone. And put it in the centre of my locker when I lock it. And this protects my things from any pick pockets.
And also, what colour I wear at the gym can also bring energy’s my way. Just think of the basics of colour magick. Wearing black could be used for banishing. At the same time red could be used for bringing love and symbolises passionate energy! Or even wearing a coloured ribbon around your wrist can be used for manifesting.
You could also carry a small witch’s pentangle if you want - that's if you don't mind people knowing you're a witch. And the way it works. You do the exercise. Think of your intention and direct the energy at the pentangle. Though it's probably best to do this certain exercise if no one's around. Like in an empty gym studio as it does take a bit of concentration. But the downside in trying this exercise with a pentangle at the gym it can be difficult to concentrate there. But it might be easier this with the pentangle at home. But having a pentangle does represent the five elements and it does show what it means to be a pagan.
OK, witches also have a thing called a witch’s cauldron for burning things. And an athame as well. But if you get creative, your drinking flask could double as a cauldron. And a piece of jewellery around your neck could symbolise an athame. If you get creative!
Feel free to experiment with all this and see what works for. Many witches are told they have to do things. Or do things exactly right.
And if anything that can just create more mental blocks. Everyone expresses magick differently. What works for one magician might or might not work for another - as Taylor Elkwood said in one of his books.
A strict Wiccan would usually only set up their altar in a certain way. Or under certain circumstances. And would probably would not agree at all with having the whole concept of a portable altar. Especially made out of mundane things like a gym water bottle. But that is the beauty of experimenting and seeing magick from different angles.
Welcome to the world of Gladiator Magick, Aka- Gym magick!
I just wanted to acknowledge- Magna Knight. In a different article on gym magick. And Emma Kyteler who written some similar articles on gym magick. That I briefly touched on in some part of this article. Namely the part about colour magick and creating a health altar.
